Somatic Therapy

Somatic Therapy

Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented therapy developed by Dr. Peter Levine that supports the body’s natural ability to process and release stress and trauma trapped in the nervous system.

Somatic Therapy involves paying close attention to subtle body cues and physical sensations such as temperature, posture, breathing, heart rate, and muscle tension.  SE therapists gently guide clients to become aware of bodily sensations, observing and uncovering the story the body tells to better understand personal history and patterns effecting present life.  Through slow controlled exploration and awareness of the body’s response to recollections it is possible to release trapped energy and return the nervous system to a state of energized calm.

SE is effective therapy for individuals with symptoms related to chronic stress, anxiety and exposure to traumatic events. The goal is to gently release stored patterns in the body allowing the nervous system to regulate, increase access to flexibility in responding and increase resilience when faced with stress. Ultimately a return to safety, vitality and balance.
