Anxiety Therapy & Stress Management
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a natural emotional and physical response to stress, uncertainty, or perceived threats. It is part of the body’s built-in “fight or flight” system, designed to keep you alert and prepared for challenges. In small amounts, anxiety can be helpful—it can motivate you to meet deadlines, stay focused, or respond quickly in difficult situations. However, when anxiety becomes persistent, intense, or disproportionate to the situation, it can interfere with daily life and overall well-being.
People experience anxiety in different ways, but it often includes symptoms such as excessive worry, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, or trouble sleeping. It may also involve physical sensations like a racing heart, shortness of breath, or a sense of panic. Anxiety can be triggered by specific events or arise without a clear cause, and it can range from mild unease to more severe conditions such as panic attacks or anxiety disorders. Understanding what anxiety is can help you recognize it early and take steps to manage it.
What is Stress?
Stress is the body’s natural response to any demand, challenge, or pressure that requires adjustment or action. It can be short-term, such as feeling tense before an exam or important meeting, or long-term when ongoing situations create constant pressure. Stress affects both the mind and the body, often leading to symptoms such as irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, headaches, and changes in sleep and appetite. In small amounts, stress can be motivating and help you stay focused, but when it becomes chronic, it can negatively impact overall health and well-being.
Stress can be caused by a wide range of factors, including work or school demands, financial difficulties, relationship conflicts, health concerns, or major life changes such as moving or losing a loved one. Even everyday pressures and responsibilities can build up over time and contribute to feeling overwhelmed.
Benefits of Counselling
Counselling can help identify personal factors like perfectionism, lack of sleep, poor coping skills, or limited social support that influence how someone experiences stress and anxiety. External situations and internal responses both impact stress, and learning to manage it often involves addressing both the environment and personal coping strategies.
