Trauma Therapy
What Is Trauma Therapy?
Trauma therapy is a specialized form of counselling designed to help individuals who have experienced distressing or overwhelming events—such as loss, accidents, abuse, or chronic stress. These experiences may have lasting emotional and physical impacts, even long after the event has passed.
Rather than “just talking about it,” trauma counselling focuses on helping your mind and body safely process what happened, at your own pace.
How Trauma Can Affect You
Trauma doesn’t look the same for everyone, and not all people who experience traumatic events develop these symptoms but common effects may include:
- Anxiety, panic, or constant worry
- Flashbacks or intrusive memories
- Trouble sleeping or frequent nightmares
- Feeling numb, disconnected, or “on edge.”
- Difficulty trusting others or feeling unsafe
- Physical symptoms like tension, fatigue, or headaches
Benefits of Counselling
Counselling can help identify symptoms as normal responses to abnormal experiences—not signs of weakness, and support slow controlled exploration, building awareness of the body’s response to recollections and allow trapped energy to be released and return the nervous system to a state of energized calm. Counselling can’t change our experiences but it can change how we respond to them.
